Dr Jason Oates at Academy Face and Body Clinic in Perth offers Frenuloplasty or frenectomy procedure, a specialised procedure aimed at resolving issues associated with a short frenulum, often causing discomfort or restricted movement. As a highly skilled and experienced surgeon, Dr Oates provides a thorough consultation to understand each patient’s unique concerns and goals. The surgery itself involves a minor, precise incision to lengthen the frenulum, improving flexibility and alleviating discomfort. Patients can expect a high standard of care, minimal downtime, and comprehensive post-operative support, ensuring optimal results and a smoother recovery process.
The glans of the penis has a frenulum – a thin elastic band of skin – similar to that which is found under the tongue. It connects the underside of the head, or glans of the penis, to the penile shaft. Similar to the tongue, this section of tissue may be too short and thick. In the mouth this is called a tongue-tie, with the penis it is called a Frenulum Breve.
The penile frenulum functions to help the foreskin stay over the glans (head) of the penis and enables the foreskin to contract comfortably, as required. If it is too short, it may restrict movement and prevent the foreskin from retracting, which may or may not interfere with normal sexual activity.
Pain in the penis may be misdiagnosed and is often a psychological problem for men so it’s important to have a consultation to ensure the correct diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Jason Oates has been performing facial plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery procedures in Perth for 25 years. After specialising as an Otolaryngologist (Head and Neck Surgeon) in 1999, Dr Oates completed further training internationally (UK and USA) to gain experience and further expand his knowledge, skill and technique in facial plastic surgery.

The Frenuloplasty is for males that are suffering from frenulum breve.
This band of skin is called a frenulum, but when it is too short it is known as frenulum breve. This can restrict the movement of the foreskin, which is what leads men to experience pain during sexual intercourse and erection.
This procedure will alleviate this pain and restriction by lengthening the frenulum. A lot of men can experience pain and discomfort when there is a tight band of skin connecting the shaft of the penis to the penis glans.
Fortunately, a Frenulum Breve can be easily fixed with a procedure known as a Frenuloplasty, for most men. This is a quick and straightforward procedure that can be performed in-clinic, using local anesthetic, with a low risk profile. The incision will take a couple weeks to heal but patients can expect to experience an increased range of penile motion and pain free erections, making sexual intercourse more enjoyable.
The Frenuloplasty procedure is a 30-minute doctor procedure that can be performed using just a local anesthetic in the clinic. We can apply some numbing cream first (but most guys really don’t need it) then a small injection of local anesthetic.
The tight band of skin is cut horizontally – sometimes for very thick bands a portion may need to be excised, or removed. The glans is rotated upwards and any tightness released. The skin is then closed using tiny dissolving stitches running lengthways along the frenulum to increase its length. Antibiotic ointment is applied; most men don’t need a dressing.
There will be a bit of discomfort on the day, but most patients can head home within an hour or two of the procedure and will be fully healed and back to normal within a couple of weeks.
Increased Comfort
Frenoplasty alleviates discomfort and pain caused by a tight frenulum during erections, sexual activity, or even daily activities. This procedure ensures a smoother and more comfortable experience.
Enhanced Sexual Experience
By increasing the range of motion of the foreskin, frenoplasty can significantly improve sexual function and pleasure. Many patients report heightened sensitivity and a more satisfying sexual experience post-procedure.
Reduced Risk of Injury
A tight frenulum can lead to tearing and bleeding during sexual activity. Frenoplasty reduces this risk by providing greater elasticity and movement, ensuring a safer experience.
Improved Hygiene
Proper foreskin retraction is essential for maintaining good penile hygiene. Frenoplasty allows for easier cleaning, reducing the risk of infections and other hygiene-related issues.
Boosted Confidence
Addressing the physical discomfort and functional limitations of a tight frenulum can lead to improved self-esteem and confidence in intimate situations.
Quick Recovery
Frenoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure with a relatively quick recovery time. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days, with full healing typically within a few weeks.
Permanent Solution
The results of frenoplasty are usually permanent, providing a long-term solution to the issues caused by a tight frenulum. This ensures lasting benefits without the need for further interventions.
Ideal candidates for a Frenoplasty are healthy individuals without underlying medical conditions that could interfere with healing. A positive mindset and realistic expectations are also key to achieving satisfying results.
The frenulum is a band of tissue on the underside of the penis that connects the glans (head) to the shaft. When this tissue is too short, it can cause various problems that may affect one’s quality of life and sexual health.
Frenoplasty is particularly beneficial for:
**Results may vary from person to person
Frenoplasty, or frenulum breve surgery, is a minor procedure aimed at treating discomfort caused by a tight or short frenulum of the penis. This band of tissue connects the glans to the shaft, and when too tight, it can cause pain and difficulties during sexual activity.
The procedure involves a quick, local anesthesia surgery where the frenulum is incised and sutured for greater elasticity and movement, typically taking less than 30 minutes with same-day discharge.
Post-surgery, patients may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and proper wound care. Most individuals can return to normal activities, including sexual intercourse, within a few weeks.
Follow-up appointments ensure proper healing and address any concerns.

Dr Oates performs Frenuloplasty procedures at the government-licensed Academy Day Hospital, on-site at Academy Face and Body in Subiaco, Perth under twilight sedation.
The Frenuloplasty procedure is to alleviate pain and restriction in the penis by lengthening the frenulum This is achieved by making an incision that is stretched to provide this length. Since the incisions are small, there is unlikely to be any major scarring that is visible.
An incision will be made to the band of skin that is tight in a horizonal line. If the patient has a thick band, part of the skin may be removed. The glands will then be rotated upwards, which will alleviant any tightness in the area. Once this is done, the incision will be closed with dissolvable stitches. They will run lengthways along the frenulum breve, which will increase the length.
There is not usually a need for dressing, but an antibiotic ointment will be applied. This procedure normally lasts around 30 minutes.
Patients are then discharged later that same day.
There are some symptoms that you can experience after having Frenuloplasty. These are only minor but can include some swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treatment area. There can also be some tenderness for a few days.
It is important to keep the treatment area as clean and dry as possible after the Frenuloplasty procedure. In addition, there should be no masturbation or sex for around a month after treatment. The foreskin should also be rolled back on a daily basis for healthy healing.
There is minimal downtime associated with frenuloplasty. Usually, patients will resume their normal routine within a couple of weeks of having treatment. Most men are able to go back to work the next day after treatment without any problems.
