Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated septum and restore proper nasal function. Dr Oates is a highly experienced Otolaryngologist and Facial Plastic Surgeon with over 23 years of practice in Perth offering expert care for individuals seeking relief from nasal obstruction and related issues.
A deviated septum, whether due to birth defects, trauma, or gradual deformation, can lead to a range of problems including chronic nasal congestion, recurrent nosebleeds, sinus infections, and even contribute to a crooked appearance of the nose. Septoplasty aims to straighten the nasal septum, comprising cartilage and bone that divides the nasal passages, thereby alleviating these symptoms and improving overall nasal function.
Septoplasty may also involve harvesting cartilage for grafts in other areas of the nose, helping to achieve optimal nasal aesthetics and symmetry. Dr Oates brings a wealth of expertise and international training, having honed his skills in the UK and USA, to deliver comprehensive care and exceptional results to our patients.
Dr Jason Oates has been performing facial plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery procedures in Perth for 25 years. After specialising as an Otolaryngologist (Head and Neck Surgeon) in 1999, Dr Oates completed further training internationally (UK and USA) to gain experience and further expand his knowledge, skill and technique in facial plastic surgery.

Septoplasty is aimed at correcting a deviated septum. The septum is the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates the nostrils, and when it’s crooked or off-center, it can obstruct airflow through the nasal passages. This obstruction can lead to various symptoms like nasal congestion, snoring, and difficulty breathing, impacting your quality of life.
Some people who suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis, a recurrence of sinus infections, can benefit greatly with septoplasty treatment. This is because a straight septum allows better surgical access to treatment of the sinuses, and also allows better sinus drainage in some cases after surgery has been performed.
Benefits of septoplasty include improved breathing, reduced nasal congestion, enhanced quality of life, and potential relief from snoring.
If you’ve been struggling with nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, or related issues, consulting with an ENT specialist is the first step. They can evaluate your condition, discuss treatment options including septoplasty, and help you make an informed decision about improving your nasal health.
Improved Breathing
By straightening the nasal septum, septoplasty restores proper airflow, making breathing easier and more comfortable. This benefit is particularly significant for individuals who struggle with chronic nasal congestion or obstructed breathing.
Reduced Snoring
Many people experience snoring due to nasal obstruction caused by a deviated septum. Septoplasty can alleviate this problem by enhancing airflow and reducing the vibration of tissues in the nasal passages.
Enhanced Quality of Sleep
Septoplasty can help reduce interruptions in breathing during sleep and promotes uninterrupted rest.
Increased Oxygen Intake
Clear nasal passages allow for optimal oxygen intake, which is crucial for overall health and vitality.
Improved Exercise Performance
Unrestricted airflow can enhance your exercise capacity and performance. Septoplasty can contribute to better breathing efficiency during workouts.
Relief from Nasal Symptoms
Chronic nasal congestion, sinus pressure, headaches, and postnasal drip are common symptoms associated with a deviated septum. Septoplasty can provide long-term relief.
Enhanced Sense of Smell and Taste
A straightened nasal septum can improve the function of the olfactory system, leading to a heightened sense of smell and taste.
Ideal candidates for a Septoplasty are healthy individuals without underlying medical conditions that could interfere with healing. A positive mindset and realistic expectations are also key to achieving satisfying results.

During a septoplasty procedure, Dr Jason Oates, otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) carefully adjusts the septum to straighten it. This typically involves making incisions inside the nose to access the septum directly. Dr Oates may then remove or reposition excess cartilage and bone to realign the septum properly. The goal is to create a clear, open passage for air to flow through both nostrils evenly.
After the procedure, patients typically experience some swelling, nasal congestion, and mild discomfort, which usually subside within a few days to weeks. Full recovery may take a few weeks, during which time it’s essential to follow post-operative care instructions provided.
For most patients, incisions are in the shape of a “W” across the central strut between the nostrils. The skin is elevated and the underlying bone and cartilage is operated on, aiming to change functionality, shape or to size. The incision is closed using sutures. Immediately after the procedure a splint may be applied to the external nose for protection and reduction of swelling. The splint may be required to stay on for 7 days.
Patients are then discharged later that same day if the procedure is performed at Academy Day Hospital or the following day (over night stay) if the procedure is performed at Subiaco Private Hospital.

Following surgery, it is important for a patient to follow the comprehensive post-surgical instructions provided to them. Appointments are scheduled at regular intervals where post-operative care is provided and a patient’s recovery is monitored.
Patients may experience bruising and swelling around the eyes. The nose will feel blocked, similar to that of a cold, which is due to internal swelling. There may also be a small amount of bleeding from the nose. These symptoms are part of the normal healing process following a Septoplasty, however patients are advised to contact the practice if they become concerned or require further information.
Majority of Septoplasty patients will have a splint and tape fitted to their nose following surgery. This will be removed along with any external sutures at one week post their procedure. Patients may have internal sutures which are dissolvable. A Nurse may fit a bandage under the Nose which is then looped around each ear to assist with nasal dripping.
Septoplasty procedures are considered invasive, therefore Dr Oates generally recommends 10-14 days off of work. This will vary from patient to patient, and will also depend on the level of physicality required in their work.
It may take up to 3 months before you feel the full benefits of surgery.
