A face lift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to address visible signs of ageing in the face and neck. Through strategic tightening of underlying tissues and repositioning of facial skin, a face lift aims to create a more youthful appearance.
With over 25 years of expertise as a specialist Otolaryngologist (Head and Neck Surgeon) Dr Oates is adept at performing a range of facelift techniques, including traditional face lifts, SMAS, deep plane, mini face lifts, and neck lifts, all tailored to achieve specific aesthetic goals.
The personalised procedure considers each patient’s unique anatomy and individual goals, focusing on natural-looking results that enhance the harmony and balance of the face.
Depending on the patient’s specific concerns and desired outcomes, a facelift may be combined with other procedures such as neck lift, eyelid surgery, or brow lift to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

During a facelift procedure, Dr Oates typically begins by making incisions around the hairline and/or behind the ears to access the underlying facial tissues. Once the incisions are made, Dr Oates lifts and repositions the facial muscles and tissues, tightening them to create a smoother, firmer look. Excess skin is also removed, further enhancing the rejuvenated appearance.
Post surgery, there is a recovery period during which patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. However, these effects typically subside within a few weeks, revealing the final results of the facelift.
It’s important for patients to follow Dr Oates’ post-operative care instructions to ensure optimal healing and results.
The cost of a facelift procedure with Dr Oates will vary, due to the individual requirements of each patient.
Following an initial consultation, the patient will be provided with a detailed estimate of any recommended procedure/s, calculated based on the following:

Incisions for a facelift are generally placed in the hairline and follow the natural curve of the ear. Through these incisions, Dr Oates elevates and repositions the underlying muscles and facial tissue. Any surplus skin is then removed, and the incisions are closed using a combination of staples and sutures.
Immediately after the procedure, sterile dressings are placed over the incisions and bandages are applied around the face and neck.
Patients are then discharged later that same day.
Following surgery, it is important for a patient to follow the comprehensive post-surgical instructions provided to them. Appointments are scheduled at regular intervals where post-operative care is provided and a patient’s recovery is monitored.
Patients can expect to experience mild bleeding from the incision line, pain and discomfort, swelling, bruising and numbness. These symptoms are part of the normal healing process following a facelift, however patients are advised to contact the practice if they become concerned or require further information.
Dressings and bandages are generally removed at one day, sutures at one week, and staples at two to three weeks following surgery.
A facelift is considered an invasive procedure, therefore Dr Oates generally recommends two to three weeks off of work. This will vary from patient to patient, and will also depend on the level of physicality required in their work.
All cosmetic surgery, including facelift surgery, is invasive and carries risks.
