A chin implant, also known as genioplasty or mentoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that enhances the appearance of the chin. This procedure involves placing a biocompatible implant over the existing chin bone to improve facial harmony and balance. Chin implants are often sought by individuals looking to strengthen a weak or receding chin, achieve a more proportionate facial profile, or complement other facial features such as the nose and jawline.
The surgery typically involves a small incision either inside the mouth or under the chin. Through this incision, Dr Oates creates a pocket in front of the chin bone and places the implant securely within it. The implant can be made from various materials, such as silicone or polyethylene, and is selected based on the patient’s aesthetic goals and anatomical needs.
The results of a chin implant are long-lasting and can significantly enhance facial symmetry and self-confidence.
Dr Jason Oates has been performing facial aesthetic procedures in Perth for 23 years. After specialising as an Otolaryngologist (Head and Neck Surgeon) in 1999, Dr Oates completed further training internationally (UK and USA) to gain experience and expand his knowledge, skill and technique in Facial Plastic Surgery.
Undergoing a surgical procedure is a serious decision, and requires careful consideration. A well-placed chin implant can significantly enhance facial proportions and aesthetic appeal. Chin implants are designed to provide permanent results, though aging and other factors can influence the overall appearance over time. Many patients experience a marked improvement in self-esteem and confidence following the procedure.
The primary purpose of chin implant surgery is to enhance facial proportion. A well-defined chin can improve the overall balance of facial features, making the nose and other features appear more proportionate. Additionally, many individuals seek this surgery to boost their self-confidence and improve their appearance.
Chin implant surgery can also address congenital defects, deformities, or injuries that have affected the chin’s shape and appearance.
There are several types of chin implants used in surgery. Silicone implants are the most common type, known for their durability and natural feel. They are solid yet flexible. Polyethylene (Medpor) implants are more porous than silicone, allowing for tissue integration, which can provide a more stable and natural result. Gore-Tex implants, made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), are soft and flexible, integrating well with the body’s tissues. Autologous tissue implants use the patient’s own bone or fat grafts and offer a more natural option, though these are less common due to the complexity of the procedure.
Enhanced Facial Balance
A well-defined chin can improve the overall balance and proportion of facial features, especially in relation to the nose and forehead.
Improved Profile
Chin implants can create a more attractive profile by making the chin more prominent and balanced, which can reduce the appearance of a double chin or a weak chin.
Increased Jawline Definition
By enhancing the chin, the jawline can appear more defined and strong, which contributes to a more youthful and sculpted appearance.
Corrects Receding Chin
Individuals with a receding or underdeveloped chin can achieve a more harmonious facial appearance with chin implants.
Minimally Invasive
Chin implants are generally placed through a small incision, often inside the mouth, which reduces visible scarring and recovery time.
Long-Lasting Results
Unlike some other cosmetic procedures that require regular maintenance, chin implants offer permanent results.
Versatility
Chin implants come in various shapes and sizes, allowing for customisation to meet the specific needs and aesthetic goals of the patient.
Complementary to Other Procedures
Chin implants can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as rhinoplasty or face lifts, to achieve more comprehensive facial balance.
Ideal candidates for a Chin Implants are healthy individuals without underlying medical conditions that could interfere with healing. A positive mindset and realistic expectations are also key to achieving satisfying results.

The surgical process begins with a consultation and planning phase. During the initial consultation, Dr Oates evaluates the patient’s facial structure, discusses aesthetic goals, and selects the appropriate implant type and size.
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. An incision is made either inside the mouth (intraoral approach) or under the chin (submental approach). The intraoral approach leaves no visible scars, while the submental approach provides easier access and placement of the implant.
A pocket is created in front of the chin bone and under the muscles. The selected implant is then carefully inserted into this pocket. The incision is closed with sutures. If the intraoral approach is used, dissolvable stitches are typically used. If the submental approach is used, sutures may need to be removed after a week or so. A dressing or bandage is applied to support the chin during initial healing. Most patients can return home the same day.
Recovery from chin implant surgery generally involves minimal downtime, with most patients resuming normal activities within a week. Swelling and bruising are common but usually subside within a few weeks.
Dr Oates performs Chin Implant procedures under twilight sedation.
An incision is usually made in the natural crease under the chin or sometimes inside the mouth. A space is then created over the chin bone and a silastic implant is inserted. Sutures are used to close the incision and a dressing is applied.
Sometimes skin coloured tape is also applied and a facial garment will be fitted. If a facial garment is fitted this will be worn for approximately 3 days post procedure.
Immediately post, patients can experience tightness and swelling. Patients are discharged later the same day.
A soft diet is suggested for a few days postoperatively as a stretched, tight sensation is commonly felt. Numbness following the procedure is common due to a nerve that comes out of the lower jaw bone on either side which can stretch.
Some swelling may persist for up to 6 weeks. Following a Chin Implant, it is important for a patient to follow the comprehensive post-surgical instructions provided to them.
Appointments are scheduled at regular intervals where post-operative care is provided and a patient’s recovery is monitored.
Makeup may be able to be worn at approximately 2 weeks post procedure. These symptoms are part of the normal healing process following Chin Implant surgery, however patients are advised to contact the practice if they become concerned or require further information.
Dr Oates generally recommends a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks off of work. This will vary from patient to patient.
