Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the appearance and functionality of the eyelids. By removing excess skin and addressing the surrounding areas, blepharoplasty offers a range of aesthetic and medical benefits.
There are three types of Blepharoplasty surgical procedures:
Upper Blepharoplasty
The upper blepharoplasty involves an incision within the crease of the upper eyelid where and skin is removed.
Lower Blepharoplasty (External Incision)
The lower blepharoplasty is done with an incision made close to the lower lash line and skin is removed.
Lower Blepharoplasty (Internal Incision)
The lower blepharoplasty is performed with an internal incision made on the inside of the lower lid, leaving no visible scar. No skin is removed using this type of blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, depending on the patient’s needs and desired outcomes.
Upper blepharoplasty addresses drooping or sagging upper eyelids, which can sometimes impair vision. By removing excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat, the upper eyelids are tightened, providing a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Lower blepharoplasty targets the lower eyelids to correct issues such as puffiness, bags under the eyes, and wrinkles. The procedure typically involves removing or repositioning fat deposits and tightening the skin to achieve a smoother, firmer look.
One of the primary reasons people opt for blepharoplasty is to rejuvenate the eye area, giving a more alert and youthful look. In cases where sagging upper eyelids obstruct vision, blepharoplasty can significantly enhance visual fields.
Many patients experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence following the surgery due to the refreshed and more vibrant appearance of their eyes.
Rejuvenated Appearance
Blepharoplasty can significantly reduce these common signs of ageing, giving a refreshed and younger look.
Brighten Your Eyes
By removing excess skin and fat, this procedure opens up your eyes, making them appear larger, more alert, and more attractive.
Improve Peripheral Vision
Excess skin on the upper eyelids can droop and impair your field of vision. Blepharoplasty removes this obstruction, enhancing your peripheral vision and overall sight.
Boost Daily Comfort
Reducing eyelid heaviness can alleviate strain and discomfort, especially during activities like reading or driving.
Enduring Youthfulness
The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, providing years of rejuvenation with proper care and maintenance.
Complementary to Other Procedures
Blepharoplasty can be combined with other facial surgeries or non-surgical treatments for a comprehensive aesthetic enhancement.
Ideal candidates for a Blepharoplasty are healthy individuals without underlying medical conditions that could interfere with healing. A positive mindset and realistic expectations are also key to achieving satisfying results.

**Results may vary from person to person
Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the specific needs and comfort of the patient.
The procedure involves making precise incisions along the natural lines of the eyelids, which helps to minimise visible scarring. Through these incisions, excess skin, fat, and muscle are meticulously removed or repositioned to create a more youthful and rested appearance. The incisions are then carefully closed with fine sutures to ensure a seamless healing process.
Recovery from blepharoplasty is generally straightforward, with most patients experiencing some swelling and bruising during the initial days. However, these effects are temporary, and many individuals are able to return to their normal activities within one to two weeks. The results of blepharoplasty are not only immediate but also long-lasting, often enduring for several years, and in some cases, they can be permanent.

Dr Oates performs blepharoplasty procedures at the government-licensed Academy Day Hospital, on-site at Academy Face and Body in Subiaco, Perth under twilight sedation.
The procedure will take between 60-90 minutes and can be performed under general anaesthetic if requested.
Incisions for a blepharoplasty are made either above or below the eye. Through these incisions, Dr Oates removes any surplus skin and the incisions are closed using stitches.
Immediately after the procedure, sterile dressings are placed over the incisions and pressure goggles are then placed over the eyes, these are to help with swelling and bruising while aiding with post-surgical discomfort.
Patients are then discharged later that same day.
You will remain in the recovery room for minimum of two hours post surgery and you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery. A post-operative review is carried by our team of registered nurses.
If you have had stitches in the surgery, these will be removed 5-6 days after surgery. Any swelling or bruising can be covered by make up after 10 days.
The feeling that most patients report is mild to moderate discomfort due largely to the swelling.
Most patients that have undergone blepharoplasty surgery will need 7-14 days off work depending on the level of physical activity in their industry.
