Anti-wrinkle injections, also known as wrinkle relaxers, are an effective age-rewinding treatment that can create a smooth and youthful appearance. The procedure works by relaxing the underlying muscles that continuously contract, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear over time. Not only can anti-wrinkle injections relax the appearance of wrinkles, but they can prevent new wrinkles from forming in the future.
What causes wrinkles and fine lines?
Wrinkles and fine lines can become noticeable over time, with frequently contracting muscles and the slowing of collagen and elastin production that naturally occurs with age. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and excessive sun exposure without SPF, can also contribute to the formation of wrinkles and lines.
Reduced Appearance of Wrinkles and Fine Lines
Wrinkle aesthetics temporarily paralyse the muscles that cause wrinkles, leading to smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. They are especially effective for dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated facial movements like frowning or squinting.
Non-Surgical and Minimally Invasive
These procedures are non-surgical, meaning they do not involve incisions or anesthesia, reducing the risks and recovery time associated with surgical facelifts or brow lifts.
Minimal Downtime
Treatments typically take just a few minutes to administer, and there is little to no downtime required afterward. Patients can often return to their daily activities immediately.
Preventative Benefits
Regular use of wrinkle aesthetics can prevent the formation of new wrinkles by inhibiting repetitive muscle movements. This preventative aspect is particularly appealing to younger individuals who want to maintain a youthful appearance.
Wrinkle Aesthetic treatments are a choice for those seeking a non-surgical procedure that can rejuvenate the skin and promote an age prevention program. It’s particularly effective for:
**Results may vary from person to person
Every wrinkle relaxer treatment plan is customised to your goals and needs. Only a qualified clinician can tell you how many units are required for each area after a thorough consultation. The severity of your lines and wrinkles, and muscle strength in the area also help determine how many units you will need.
If you want to treat crow’s feet, two to three injections are generally required along the frame of each eye.
For frown lines, around five injections are required between the eyebrows.
To get rid of forehead lines, again, around five injections are administered in key areas across the forehead.
Our experienced injectors will ensure that you receive just the right amount of relaxer to create a natural-looking appearance.

When performed by an experienced injector, treatment with anti-wrinkle injections will not leave you looking expressionless. Only tiny amounts of wrinkle relaxers are injected, and they are focused on very specific areas. The vast majority of facial muscles will not be affected at all. Wrinkle relaxers are used as a tool to soften, reshape and lift the skin of the face, as opposed to freezing the facial expressions.
Our experienced injectors at Academy Face and Body in Perth will always aim to produce the most natural-looking results, complimenting your natural beauty and tailoring treatment to your needs.
Numerous factors are involved in facial aging. (See “The Aging Face”). Wrinkle relaxers decrease the repetitive muscular movements that cause fine lines to become visible. In younger skin, injections can aid in the prevention of wrinkle formation. If a loss of deeper skin support, known as dermal atrophy, or significant sun damage is present, even complete relaxation of the muscle will not completely remove the wrinkle.
For these lines, a dermal filler may be require, and added, two weeks post-treatment. Skin resurfacing, using a chemical peel or laser treatment, can also be considered to smooth out the damage to the skin. The depth and overall condition of your wrinkles will be assessed during your consultation, where we can develop a personalised treatment plan designed to address your specific concerns.
The muscle weakening and reduction of crow’s feet, forehead and frown lines will usually last three to four months. After this time has passed, another treatment will be required. After several treatments, the effects of wrinkle relaxers may last longer in some areas. Other factors, such as your lifestyle and skincare routine, can also play a role in how long your results will last. You can discuss this with your clinician during your consultation.
Age has very little to do with when you should and shouldn’t start using anti-wrinkle injections, with the severity of your lines being the main determining factor. Patients who want to use these injections as a preventative measure can start treatment in their mid to late twenties. Otherwise, most wrinkle relaxer patients start treatment in their thirties. Depending on lifestyle and genetics, you may even find that you only need to start treatment in your late thirties. Every patient is different and will need a different treatment plan, taking a personalised approach to treatment.
Every patient will have different preferences and pain tolerances. While topical numbing cream is certainly an option, it is not usually necessary. Wrinkle relaxers are administered with very fine needles, and should not produce more than a very quick sting.
At Academy Face and Body in Perth, you will always first consult with either a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner. From there, a qualified and experienced Cosmetic Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse will administer the injections. It is important that not just anyone offers this treatment, as a thorough understanding of the injection’s ingredients and the patient’s facial anatomy is required to achieve the best results. Patient care and satisfaction with results are some of our top priorities
If you want to use cosmetic injectables as a wrinkle preventative treatment, it is important to treat the area again within two weeks of the muscular action returning, as opposed to once the lines have begun to return, as lines are a sign of damage. To prevent wrinkles, starting treatment no later than your 30s is usually recommended. If you would like to incorporate wrinkle prevention into your treatment plan, you can discuss this with one of our experienced injectors during your initial consultation at Academy Face and Body in Perth.
To prepare for your wrinkle relaxers treatment, you should avoid excessive sun exposure for two weeks, and stop taking certain medications that could potentially interfere with your results and recovery. These medications will be outlined to you during your consultation, but typically include products that have blood-thinning effects. For five days before your procedure, you should avoid using skincare products that are made with vitamin A or retinol, AHA’s, enzymes, and exfoliants. Avoid hair removal treatment on the specific treatment areas, such as waxing, tweezing and IPL for at least three days before receiving anti-wrinkle treatment. A great way to prepare is to maintain good health, by staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol for about two days before treatment. These preparation steps can positively influence your results and recovery.
Wrinkle relaxers work by inhibiting continuous muscle contractions that cause fine lines to form, while dermal fillers add volume and structure to the desired treatment areas. While dermal fillers can have a smoothing effect, anti-wrinkle injections tend to work best when treating wrinkles in areas such as frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet. Overall, both treatments are great for anti-aging purposes, but they each work completely differently and will create different results. The treatment option that is perfect for you can be identified during your consultation. Sometimes, a combination of both treatment options can be suitable to achieve the patient’s ideal results.
