Scrotoplasty, also known as scrotal reconstruction, is a surgical procedure designed to correct congenital anomalies, repair damage from injury or illness, or assist in gender confirmation surgery.
Scrotoplasty involves the reconstruction or repair of the scrotum, which is the pouch of skin containing the testicles.
This procedure can address a range of medical and cosmetic concerns, including hypospadias repair, which corrects congenital abnormalities where the urethral opening is not located at the tip of the penis, scrotal lymphedema, which treats swelling caused by lymphatic fluid accumulation, gender confirmation surgery, which creates a scrotum for transgender men as part of female-to-male (FTM) transition procedures, and injury repair, which reconstructs the scrotum after trauma or surgery.
Dr Jason Oates has been performing facial plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery procedures in Perth for 25 years. After specialising as an Otolaryngologist (Head and Neck Surgeon) in 1999, Dr Oates completed further training internationally (UK and USA) to gain experience and further expand his knowledge, skill and technique in facial plastic surgery.

Scrotoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reconstruct or repair the scrotum, the pouch of skin containing the testicles. This operation may be performed for various medical reasons, including congenital abnormalities, trauma, cancer treatment, or gender-affirming surgery. The procedure aims to restore a natural appearance and function to the scrotum, improving both the physical and psychological well-being of the patient.
Techniques used in scrotoplasty can involve the removal of excess skin, creation of a new scrotum using skin grafts, or reconstruction using existing tissue.
Depending on the specific needs of the patient, scrotoplasty can be tailored to achieve the best possible outcome. The surgery is typically performed by a urologist or a plastic surgeon with expertise in genital reconstructive surgery. Recovery times and outcomes can vary, but most patients experience significant improvements in comfort and appearance post-surgery.
Scrotoplasty represents a crucial option for individuals seeking to correct scrotal abnormalities and enhance their quality of life.
Enhanced Comfort and Functionality
Scrotoplasty can alleviate discomfort caused by conditions such as scrotal lymphedema or redundant scrotal skin. By reducing excess tissue, the procedure improves daily comfort, reduces chafing, and minimises the risk of infections.
Aesthetic Improvements
This procedure can help achieve a more aesthetically pleasing appearance of the scrotum, boosting self-confidence and body image. Scrotoplasty offers personalised solutions to meet your aesthetic goals.
Improved Hygiene
Excessive scrotal skin can create challenges in maintaining proper hygiene. Scrotoplasty simplifies personal care routines, reducing the buildup of moisture and bacteria. This results in better overall genital health and a decreased risk of skin issues and infections.
Post-Injury or Post-Surgery Reconstruction
For individuals who have experienced trauma or complications from previous surgeries, scrotoplasty offers reconstructive benefits. It can restore the scrotum’s appearance and function, promoting physical and emotional healing.
Gender-Affirming Surgery
Scrotoplasty is a crucial component of gender-affirming surgeries for transgender men. This procedure helps create a scrotum that aligns with their gender identity, significantly contributing to their transition journey and overall well-being.

Dr Jason Oates tailors each scrotoplasty procedure to the unique needs and goals of the patient. Our state-of-the-art facilities and compassionate care team are dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.

For most patients, incisions are in the shape of a “W” across the central strut between the nostrils. The skin is elevated and the underlying bone and cartilage is operated on, aiming to change functionality, shape or to size. The incision is closed using sutures. Immediately after the procedure a splint may be applied to the external nose for protection and reduction of swelling. The splint may be required to stay on for 7 days.
Patients are then discharged later that same day if the procedure is performed at Academy Day Hospital or the following day (overnight stay) if the procedure is performed at Subiaco Private Hospital.
Following surgery, it is important for a patient to follow the comprehensive post-surgical instructions provided to them. Appointments are scheduled at regular intervals where post-operative care is provided and a patient’s recovery is monitored.
Patients may experience bruising and swelling around the eyes. The nose will feel blocked, similar to that of a cold, which is due to internal swelling. There may also be a small amount of bleeding from the nose. These symptoms are part of the normal healing process following a Septoplasty, however patients are advised to contact the practice if they become concerned or require further information.
Majority of Septoplasty patients will have a splint and tape fitted to their nose following surgery. This will be removed along with any external sutures at one week post their procedure. Patients may have internal sutures which are dissolvable. A Nurse may fit a bandage under the Nose which is then looped around each ear to assist with nasal dripping.
Septoplasty procedures are considered invasive, therefore Dr Oates generally recommends 10-14 days off of work. This will vary from patient to patient, and will also depend on the level of physicality required in their work.
It may take up to 3 months before you feel the full benefits of surgery.
