Labiaplasty is a specialised surgical procedure designed to reshape or reduce the labia minora, the inner lips of the vaginal opening. This procedure is sought for various reasons, including physical discomfort, aesthetic preferences, and emotional wellbeing. It’s normal for the labia to change in size and shape, particularly after childbirth and as women age. These changes can sometimes lead to irritation, discomfort during physical activities, or self-consciousness.
Labiaplasty can positively impact these issues, offering relief from physical discomfort and enhancing the overall appearance of the labia. This can lead to increased comfort, improved self-esteem, and a more confident lifestyle.
Dr Jason Oates ensures that each procedure is tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients, prioritising safety, comfort, and satisfaction.

Labiaplasty offers several benefits, including enhanced comfort by relieving irritation, chafing, and discomfort during physical activities or while wearing certain clothing. It also improves aesthetics by achieving a more symmetrical and visually pleasing appearance, boosting your self-esteem and confidence. Additionally, it restores functionality by addressing issues such as labial tears or stretching, improving overall genital health and function.
Typically, labiaplasty is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and the complexity of the procedure. The surgery involves carefully trimming excess tissue to achieve the desired shape and size, followed by meticulous suturing to promote optimal healing. Most patients can return home the same day and resume normal activities within a few weeks.
Physical Comfort
Many women experience discomfort due to enlarged labia, which can cause irritation and pain during various activities such as exercise, cycling, or sexual intercourse. Labiaplasty can reduce the size of the labia, eliminating friction and chafing, and allowing you to enjoy your daily activities without discomfort.
Enhanced Aesthetic Appearance
For some women, the appearance of their labia can be a source of self-consciousness. Labiaplasty can help achieve a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing look, boosting your confidence and allowing you to feel more comfortable in your body.
Improved Sexual Experience
Excess tissue in the labia can sometimes interfere with sexual activity, causing discomfort or pain. By removing this excess tissue, labiaplasty can enhance sexual pleasure and comfort, making intimate moments more enjoyable.
Increased Self-Confidence
A key benefit of labiaplasty is the boost in self-confidence that many women experience post-surgery.
Customised Results
Labiaplasty is a highly personalised procedure. Dr Oates will work with you to understand your goals and expectations, ensuring that the results align with your desired outcome. Whether you seek a minor adjustment or a more significant change, labiaplasty can be tailored to meet your specific needs.
Ideal candidates for a Labiaplasty are healthy individuals without underlying medical conditions that could interfere with healing. A positive mindset and realistic expectations are also key to achieving satisfying results.

This surgery can benefit a diverse range of people for various reasons:

Labiaplasty is a surgical option for reducing the size of the Labia minora, typically performed as a day case procedure in a fully accredited theatre. Dr Oates administers twilight sedation and local anesthetic, often complemented by a Pudendal block for extended pain relief.
The surgery generally lasts around 1 hour, with patients typically spending 3-4 hours in the hospital. Dr Oates specialises in the “free edge trimming” technique, known for its reliability in achieving a symmetrical and neat appearance. Utilising RadioSurgery ensures a nearly bloodless surgical field and minimal trauma, leading to faster healing. The procedure involves gently closing the edge with dissolving sutures for added comfort.
Moreover, patients have the option to combine Labiaplasty with other vaginal surgeries such as Labia majora reduction or filling, vaginal rejuvenation/tightening, or G-spot augmentation. This comprehensive approach allows patients to address multiple concerns during a single surgical session.

Dr Oates FRACS performs labiaplasty as a day case in our fully accredited theatre at Academy Day Hospital under a combination of twilight sedation and local anesthetic. A Pudendal block is usually used to give pain relief for up to 24 hrs.
The surgery takes around 1 hour with a total time at the hospital of 3-4 hours.
There are a number of techniques to reduce the size of the Labia minora. Dr Oates prefers the “free edge trimming” technique because it is the most reliable to produce a symmetrical and neat appearance. Use of RadioSurgery provides a near bloodless surgical field with minimal trauma for more rapid healing. The edge is gently closed with dissolving sutures.
It is possible to have other vagina surgery at the same time as labiaplasty such as Labia majora reduction and/or filling, vaginal rejuvenation/tightening or G-spot augmentation.
It is normal to expect some discomfort, swelling, bruising and discharge/ooze after the procedure. Ice packs can be used carefully on the area intermittently for the first 48 hours out of surgery along with oral pain relief. You may need something to avoid constipation as the healing time is not the time to suffer from this – lots of water, fruit and vegetables, fibre or whatever works for you.
No vaginal packing is used for Labiaplasty. Some patients find it useful to use sanitary pads in the first week. Cotton underwear is preferable during the recovery.
Most people want to take a week off their normal activities – but some are back at ‘office’ jobs within a few days. Gradually return to more activities over the next 3 weeks as you feel comfortable. You may return to sexual intercourse after 4 weeks if you feel comfortable.
All cosmetic surgery, including labiaplasty surgery, is invasive and carries risks.
