When performed by an experienced injector, treatment with anti-wrinkle injections will not leave you looking expressionless. Only tiny amounts of wrinkle relaxers are injected, and they are focused on very specific areas. The vast majority of facial muscles will not be affected at all. Wrinkle relaxers are used as a tool to soften, reshape and lift the skin of the face, as opposed to freezing the facial expressions.

Wrinkle treatments are absorbed into the neuromuscular junction and typically begin to take effect within 2–4 days. The maximum effect is usually seen after about two weeks. At this time, a follow-up appointment may be arranged to review your treatment and discuss any adjustments if needed. As with all medical treatments, results vary between individuals and may take time to become fully visible.

Numerous factors contribute to facial ageing (see “The Aging Face”). Wrinkle treatments temporarily relax the muscles that contribute to visible fine lines. The depth and overall condition of your wrinkles, as well as the health of your skin, will be assessed during consultation.

In some cases, additional treatments such as volumising treatments or skin resurfacing (chemical peels or laser) may be discussed to address deeper lines or skin damage. A personalised treatment plan will be developed to suit your individual needs and goals.

A benefit of treatment with wrinkle relaxers is that results are not permanent. The effects of wrinkle treatments on areas such as the crow’s feet, forehead, and frown lines usually last around three to four months. After this time, another treatment may be considered. The duration of results can vary between individuals and may be influenced by factors such as lifestyle and skincare routine. You can discuss this with your clinician during your consultation.

There is no set age for starting wrinkle treatments. Suitability depends on individual factors such as the presence and severity of lines, lifestyle, and genetics. Each patient will receive a personalised treatment plan during consultation to address their specific needs and goals.

Anaesthetic is not usually required, although some patients may prefer topical numbing cream. Wrinkle treatments are administered with very fine needles, and most patients experience only mild discomfort.

Wrinkle treatments using cosmetic injectables are then administered by a qualified and appropriately trained Doctor, Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse under medical supervision. These treatments require an understanding of facial anatomy and prescription only medicines, which is why they are performed only by trained health professionals in accordance with regulatory standards.

Some people choose to discuss wrinkle relaxer treatments at an earlier stage, before lines are deeply established. These treatments work by relaxing certain muscles, which may reduce the appearance of existing lines and slow their progression. Whether this approach is appropriate depends on individual factors such as age, skin type, lifestyle, and medical history. Your clinician can discuss possible options with you during a personalised consultation.

Before a wrinkle treatment, your clinician may recommend avoiding certain activities, medications, or skincare products that could increase the risk of bruising or irritation. For example, blood-thinning medications, active skincare ingredients such as retinol or acids, or recent hair removal treatments in the area may be discussed. Wrinkle treatments work by inhibiting continuous muscle contractions that cause fine lines to form, while volumising add volume and structure to the desired treatment areas. While dermal fillers can have a smoothing effect, anti-wrinkle injections tend to work best when treating wrinkles in areas such as frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet. Overall, both treatments are great for anti-aging purposes, but they each work completely differently and will create different results.
