Functional Rhinoplasty is an effective consideration for correcting nasal trauma resulting from injuries or accidents. It can improve the nose’s function.

For functional rhinoplasty and ENT-associated procedures, our team operates at Subiaco Private Hospital under general anesthesia, prioritising your safety and well-being.
During the procedure, Dr Oates typically makes incisions in the shape of a “W” across the central strut between the nostrils. Through these carefully placed incisions, he addresses underlying bone and cartilage structures to enhance functionality. The incisions are then meticulously closed with sutures.
Patients can expect an overnight stay at Subiaco Private Hospital.

Dr Jason Oates performs functional Rhinoplasty and Otolaryngology (ENT) associated procedures at Subiaco Private Hospital under general anaesthesia and are traditionally an overnight procedure and are discharged the following day.
For most patients, incisions are in the shape of a “W” across the central strut between the nostrils. The skin is elevated and the underlying bone and cartilage is operated on aiming to change functionality. The incision is closed using sutures. Immediately after the procedure a splint may be applied to the external nose for protection and reduction of swelling. The splint may be required to stay on for 7 days.
Following surgery, it is important for a patient to follow the comprehensive post-surgical instructions provided to them. Appointments are scheduled at regular intervals where post-operative care is provided and a patient’s recovery is monitored.
Patients may experience bruising and swelling around the eyes. The nose will feel blocked, similar to that of a cold, which is due to internal swelling. There may also be a small amount of bleeding from the nose. These symptoms are part of the normal healing process following functional Rhinoplasty, however patients are advised to contact the practice if they become concerned or require further information.
Majority of functional rhinoplasty patients will have a splint and tape fitted to their nose following surgery. This will be removed along with any external sutures at one week post their procedure. Patients may have internal sutures which are dissolvable. A Nurse may fit a bandage under the Nose which is then looped around each ear to assist with nasal dripping.
Functional rhinoplasty procedures are considered invasive, therefore Dr Oates generally recommends two to three weeks off work. This will vary from patient to patient, and will also depend on the level of physicality required in their work.
All functional rhinoplasty surgery, is invasive and carries risks.
