14 Jul Why winter is the best time to undergo IPL Hair Reduction
Did you know that the average woman will spend 72 days shaving their legs over the course of their lifetime? Not only is shaving and waxing time-consuming, painful, and temporary, but the costs over time can also really add up. If you’re looking for a more cost-effective, permanent solution, IPL hair reduction, also more commonly referred to as IPL hair removal, is an absolute game changer.
While IPL hair removal can be performed at any time of year, winter is widely regarded as the best time to begin your treatment series. Keep reading to learn why this winter is the ultimate time to begin your journey to silky-smooth skin.
Preparing for treatment is easier in the winter months
Before your first IPL hair removal treatment, you will need to lay some groundwork for your skin. To ensure the success of your treatments, the root of your hair needs to remain in the follicle. As such, you cannot wax, tweeze or epilate in the weeks prior to your treatment.
This can be an inconvenience during the summer months, as many of us don’t wish to show off our hairy skin whilst wearing summer dresses, shorts, and bikinis. In winter, on the other hand, this poses less of a problem, as we’re usually covered up with jeans and sweaters. Even better, such layers allow us to grow out our hair before shaving 12 hours before treatment, which ensures the most effective results.
You’re less exposed to the sun in winter
During winter, we spend less time outdoors in the sun and more time rugged up inside watching Netflix. This makes winter an ideal time to start your IPL hair removal sessions, as you must avoid any type of sun exposure for two weeks before and after each treatment.
Excessive sun exposure prior to treatment can make the skin more sensitive to the light energy used during the process, while sun exposure after treatment can add additional heat to the treated area, which can lead to skin damage and hyperpigmentation. For this reason, winter is the ideal time for IPL treatments, as we are out in the sun less and, when we are, we’re usually rocking longer sleeves.
IPL hair removal works best on pale skin
IPL hair removal works by delivering intense pulsed light into the skin, which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. While advancements in IPL technology are allowing more skin tones to receive hair removal treatment, the process ultimately works best on patients with pale skin and dark hair. As such, winter is the ultimate time to undergo IPL hair removal, as our skin is naturally lighter due to reduced sun exposure.
However, keep in mind that a fake tan can affect the outcome of your hair removal treatments just as much as a natural one. Given this, you will also need to avoid any self-tanning lotions and sprays for at least two weeks before treatment. If you’re one to stay bronzed with self-tanner year-round, the best time to give it a rest and rock the natural look is definitely winter.
It’s easier to avoid sweat in the colder months
Following your IPL hair reduction treatment, you’ll need to avoid any activities that can lead to excessive sweating for at least 24 hours. While you can easily reschedule your gym session, the Australian heat can cause us to sweat without doing anything at all. Avoiding such perspiration is much easier during the cooler winter months.
In addition, you’ll also want to avoid any swimming immediately after treatment, as the chemicals evident in both swimming pools and the sea can irritate the skin. This is easy-peasy in winter, although it can be more of a challenge in the hot summer months.
You’ll be hair-free by summer!
Hair-free skin doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, for best hair reduction results, most patients require a course of six to ten IPL treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart. By beginning your IPL hair removal journey in the winter months, you can expect to have silky-smooth skin by summertime. You’ll be ready to hit the beach at a moment’s notice without having to worry about whether you’ve shaved recently.
