A face that is broader near the cheekbones and slimmer at the chin generally looks more youthful. Most people have a more heart or egg-shaped face when they’re younger but as we age, the lower half of the face broadens, which reduces the prominence of the cheekbones.
In other cases, someone may simply have extra buccal (cheek) fat, which gives them a chubbier or rounder facial structure.
If you would like your cheekbones to be more prominent, a buccal fat reduction procedure can help you achieve a slimmer face.
Buccal fat pads are generally the size of walnuts and are located deep within the cheeks between the corners of the mouth and the nostrils. During a buccal fat removal procedure, a surgeon will remove the excess padding in this area in an effort to reshape the face.
Your surgeon will help you decide how much fat should be removed as excessive fat removal can cause a gaunt appearance. The end result should be a natural, defined look.
Buccal fat removal is an in-hospital procedure that is performed under general anaesthetic and takes around 20 minutes.
To remove the excess cheek fat, an incision will be made inside the mouth. Once the fat has been removed, several dissolving stitches will be used to close up the incision.
Buccal fat removal can also be paired with additional procedures such as rhinoplasty and facial implants to achieve a more desirable face shape and structure.
Most patients can expect to make a full recovery within 3 to 5 days and since all of the incisions are made inside the mouth, wound care is not necessary. The stitches should dissolve completely in 6 to 7 days.
While patients will be able to see results immediately after their procedure, there will be some swelling that will need to subside before the full results can be seen. Most patients can return to work within 2 – 3 days following their procedure at Academy Face and Body.
It is also advisable for patients to follow a liquid diet for at least a week after their surgery to accelerate healing and prevent complications.
The results of a buccal fat removal procedure are permanent.
Who is an ideal candidate?
If you are bothered by the appearance of your cheeks, are physically healthy and at a stable weight, you could be an ideal candidate for a buccal fat removal procedure. It’s also ideal if you’re a nonsmoker.
